5 Neighborhoods to Rent in if You Attend Xavier University in Norwood, OH

Whether you’re in grad school or the later years of undergraduate studies, off-campus housing has become the norm.  Xavier University is located in Norwood, Ohio.

Norwood is the largest city in the country that is entirely surrounded by another city, namely, Cincinnati.  Xavier University has a very reasonable commute from many of the Cincinnati neighborhoods that border it.  In this article, we’ll show you some of the best places to rent for off-campus housing.

1. Hyde Park

Hyde Park shares a border with Norwood.  In fact, many people consider the shopping center Rookwood Pavilion to be part of Hyde Park when it is in fact part of Norwood.  Hyde Park Square, one of its central business districts, is just a five-minute drive from Xavier’s campus.    It is also a bikeable 2.1 miles with an estimated 13-minute commute.  The metro bus route from Hyde Park to Xavier is a bit indirect and can take anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes.

2. Oakley

Oakley shares a board with Norwood and Hyde Park.  Oakley Square is a mere 2.3 miles which is a seven-minute drive or 15 minutes bike ride to Xavier.  Again, because of route issues, the public bus system can take anywhere from 30 to 50 minutes to go from Oakley to Xavier.  Oakley, like Hyde Park, has lots of restaurants and bars as well as nightlife and concert venues.  It is far enough from campus to provide some separation but close enough that you can get there in under 10 minutes.

3. North Avondale

North Avondale is perhaps the closest neighborhood to Xavier that isn’t in Norwood itself.  While the time and distance vary from street-to-street, Google Maps estimates 0.9 miles separating North Avondale and Xavier.  That puts the average bike ride at six minutes, three minutes by car, or 18 minutes by foot.

4. Walnut Hills

The heart of Walnut Hills is about 1.7 miles from Xavier.  This makes for a five-minute car drive, 20-minute bus ride, or a 10 minute/2.1 mile bike ride.  Walnut Hills is the closest to downtown of any neighborhoods on this list so if it is important to get access to the rest of the city then perhaps Walnut Hills is the place for you.

5. Pleasant Ridge

Further north, but still in the city limits of Cincinnati, is Pleasant Ridge.  Pleasant Ridge is a bit further but still around a ten-minute drive from Xavier.  It would be a little more difficult to bike at just over 3.5 miles each direction but it has the shortest bus commute of any neighborhoods on this list at just 16 minutes.  If you want to live off-campus but don’t have a car then Pleasant Ridge might be the place for you!
