What to do in the Clifton Gaslight District, Cincinnati (Updated for 2020)

The Clifton Gaslight District of Cincinnati is located in the central part of the city north of downtown.  It is near the University of Cincinnati campus and offers a diversity of retail, dining, and drinking establishments.

The neighborhood’s original gas lamps account for the name “Gaslight District.”  This village-like, tree-lined community features residential streets with historic homes and mansions.  A mixture of students, professors, artists, families, and more call Clifton home.

Esquire Theater

If you want a true sense of the Gaslight District, take a trip to the movies.  Originally built in 1911, The Esquire Theater is a treasure beloved by the community.  In the 1980s, the theater was threatened to be replaced with big chain restaurants, but residents joined together to save it and promote it as an art house movie theater.  According to Esquire Theater’s website, “…the owners are committed to showing independent, foreign, low-budget and commercial films – movies they believe interested Cincinnati moviegoers should be given an opportunity to see.”

Ludlow Avenue Shopping and Dining District

The Gaslight District is known for one-of-a-kind shops, restaurants, and bars. There are plenty of places to dine in the district; choose from upscale or casual, French, Italian, Mexican, or Indian food, or hometown establishments.

It also features some of Clifton’s best little shops.  Gifts, clothing, accessories, home goods and more.  Enjoy walking and spending the day exploring what the district has to offer.

Cincy Red Bike

Clifton is also home to a Cincy Red Bike station located at the Clifton Library & Burnet Woods – 3402 Brookline.  Pick up a bike and enjoy the Gaslight District!

Clifton Cultural Arts Center

Enjoy an event, exhibit, or class at the Clifton Cultural Arts Center, a community-created art center.  The CCAC website states “the center is fueled by shared passion and a singular belief – collective experience of creative and artistic expression brings together diverse communities and nurtures more inspired, more insightful children and adults.”

Clifton Parks

Clifton has a variety of parks in the area to explore.

Mt. Storm Park is on a historic estate featuring the original gazebo from the Bowler home.  Today it has been converted to a children’s playground with a great view of the Clifton skyline.

Mt. Airy Forest offers a dog park, panic areas, disc golf, hiking trails, and more.

Burnet Woods is 89.3 acres with a walking trail that University of Cincinnati students and families particularly enjoy.
